Until recently, very little was known about substellar companions to
nearby stars. Advances in astronomical techniques have now made
the critical observations possible. "Companion City" is an informal
research group that seeks both to compile the results of all
relevant surveys into the
NStars Database and to carry out strategic surveys where data
are needed. The overall aim of this program is to determine
the mass/separation distribution for companions down into the
planetary mass regime.
Current observational efforts include :
- Astrometric searches (e.g., ASPENS)
- Deep sky surveys (for wide companions)
- HST Snapshot surveys
- Keck survey
- Speckle IR surveys
